I have found many people overlook this part of the blog which is often more interesting than the original post!

My blog nick-name is SIR HUGH. I'm not from the aristocracy - my middle name is Hugh which relates to the list of 282 hills in Scotland compiled by Sir Hugh Munro in 1891. I climbed my last one (Sgurr Mor) on 28th June 2009

50. Christmas snow at Arnside

On Sunday I breakfasted around 7:30 am with no sign of snow. By 10:30 there was a covering of three inches.

It is now Tuesday and more snow has fallen on and off and travel has been difficult, but with my daughter Jill we have managed so far. When Jill arrived at Arnside on Sunday afternoon she could not get up the hill to my house and had to park here car several hundred yards away. We then made several trips from car to house using the wheelybin to ferry all her Christmas impedimenta. We plan one more shopping trip tomorrow and there is till doubt depending on what happens during the night.

The following pictures, which were all taken within half a mile of my house tell the story.

  1. Good photos!

On my successful trip down to London today, after yesterday's aborted effort, I witnessed one of the most spectacular wintery wonderland scenes I've ever seen. Unfortunately, being on the M40 I wasn't really in a position to stop to photograph it.

  2. Have enjoyed the photos, most especially the last one of Jake in his new coat. Is that a happy dog, or what?

Happy holidays, Sir Hugh. Best wishes for the coming year.

  3. We used to worry while watching the TV weather forecasts: It's raining on Sir Hugh, we said. But Sir Hugh pooh-poohed this. Arnside has its own micro-climate, you said. Now I understand what the prefix means. The space to live in is shrinking.

  4. All - Have a good Christmas and I wish you all well ~for The New Year.

Gayle - thanks for your comment. Glad you survived your ordeal. In the mountains it's a different matter because you are prepared for this kind of thing and accept it for what it is.

The Crow - Glad you liked the pics. I have to admit that the last one of Jake was taken by my daughter. She is fearless with the camera taking no account of moving objects, lighting or whatever, thereby obtaining much more interesting results.

BB - That thing about the microclimate is a bit of a cliché -everybody seems to say this about their own little patch and it made me feel a bit squirmy when you quoted me as having said it.

  6. HH - Do I detect a hint of bias in your comment?

  7. None whatsoever. This statement was the result of tireless reseach and surveys carried out amongst the genreal public. 9 out of 10 people agree Jake is more handsome than the standard version.
